Standard Test Method for Penetration of Bituminous Materials.This standard is issued under the fixed designation ASTM D5 and the number following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision.

A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. A superscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the ministry of roads and high ways.

As per of standard D5, bitumen 60/70 has 1.4% acceptable variation and bitumen 80/100 up to 3.8% variation.

It means if penetration of bitumen 60/70 become 59 to 71 also acceptable.

for bitumen 80/100 the range between 77  to 104 is acceptable testing based on ASTM D5 standard.
