Self-adhesive bituminous membrane is a cold applied self-adhesive, flexible, waterproofing and sealing membrane made from rubber modified bitumen compound with tear resistant cross laminated polythene film on its upper side and removable silicone film on the underside.
Self adhesive bituminous membrane is a coreless waterproofing self-adhesive membrane where the upper facing acts as both reinforcement and protection. It is a 100 micron cross laminated polyethylene film, conferring dimensional stability, puncture resistance, breaking strength and temperature resistance. It has the following features:
-Cold applied, does not require any heating
-Easy, quick and clean to install
-Permanent flexibility and protection against water
-Effective water and vapor barrier
-Absorbs substrate movement
-Root resistant & Tear resistant
-does not contaminate ground water
1. Surface Preparation
Table of Contents
ToggleFirst, prepare the substrate by ensuring it is smooth, clean, and free from oil, grease, defects, or irregularities that could damage the membrane. Then, use a wire brush or broom to remove all dirt, dust, and other contaminants. As a result, you create an ideal surface for proper adhesion.
2. Priming the Surface
Next, apply primer (ASTM D-41) only to the areas that you will cover with the membrane on the same working day. If you don’t apply the membrane within 24 hours, re-prime the surface to maintain adhesion quality. Additionally, apply the primer using a brush or roller at a rate of 0.3 to 0.4 liters per square meter, depending on the surface’s porosity. However, you don’t need to use primer on metal or plastic surfaces.
3. Membrane Installation
After priming, fill all corners, angles, and joints with cement mortar or bitumen mastic to ensure a smooth transition. Then, reinforce these areas with membrane strips to improve adhesion and durability. At the beginning of each roll, peel back the release film slowly over a width of about 30 cm. and press the adhesive side firmly onto the substrate.
As you continue, gradually peel off the rest of the film while pressing the membrane using a soft brush or cloth. Start from the center and work toward the edges to avoid trapping air bubbles. Make sure to align adjacent rolls correctly, overlapping them by at least 50 mm on the sides and 100 mm at the ends. Once positioned, use a rubber roller to press the overlaps firmly after removing the silicone release film.
Finally, avoid applying self-adhesive bitumen membrane at temperatures below -5°C. Also, protect the membrane from direct exposure to weathering by using suitable coverings.
Self adhesive membrane- Flat Areas: 1.1m²/m² (Approx.) per layer with min.50mm Overlaps and min.100mm end laps. Average wastages: 2-3%.
(ASTM D-41) – Smooth Surface: 0.3-0.4 Ltr/m² (Approx.) will give a dry film thickness of 100 microns.
Self adhesive bitumen membrane comply with the performance requirements and tolerance level of UEAtc (European)
Union Technical Agreement) and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials).
The rolls must be stored vertically in a covered area, away from direct sunlight, UV and other sources of heat. For best performance, the product should be used within 12 months from the date of production. Excessive exposure to sunlight and UV will result in the deterioration of the product quality.
Nominal roll length: 10m, 15m, 20m; Nominal roll width: 1m: Nominal thickness: 1.5, 1.6, 1.8, and 2mm
