KCl is a naturally occurring salt composed of potassium and chlorine. It’s white, highly soluble in water, and known for its clay-inhibiting properties in drilling fluids. It’s also used in food processing, fertilizers, and medical treatments — but in drilling? It’s a game changer.
Formula: KCl
Molar mass: 74.55 g/mol

ToggleSolubility: Highly soluble
Appearance: White crystalline or powder form
In drilling operations, KCl is primarily valued for one key thing: shale stabilization. When water-based muds encounter reactive clays in the earth, those clays swell, leading to bit balling, stuck pipes, and even formation collapse.
The KCl works by replacing sodium ions in the clay structure with potassium ions, which reduces swelling and prevents disintegration. This keeps the borehole intact and greatly reduces downtime.
With KCl in your fluid system, expect smoother operations. The borehole stays cleaner, there’s less torque and drag, and you get a more predictable drilling response — especially in horizontal or deviated wells.

When ordering potassium chloride (KCl), specify the grade (Drilling, Technical, Fertilizer), required purity level (e.g., 98–99.5%), and particle size (powder, granular, or crystalline). Confirm moisture content (<0.5%) and solubility for your application. Choose the right packaging (25kg bags, jumbo bags, palletized). Request technical documents like COA, MSDS, and TDS. Mention your delivery port, lead time, and any special handling or labeling needs.
1. What is the shelf life of potassium chloride?
Up to 5 years when stored in a dry, cool place in original sealed packaging.
2. Can KCl be used in offshore drilling?
Yes. It’s widely used in both onshore and offshore water-based mud systems.
3. Do you provide free samples?
Yes, we can send up to 1 kg sample upon request (shipping cost may apply).
4. What ports do you export from?
Mersin (Turkey) and Jebel Ali (UAE).
5. Is potassium chloride eco-friendly?
Yes. It is a safer alternative to many other shale inhibitors with lower environmental impact.
